Military Service: 34 years in US Army Corps of Engineers, retired as Brigadier General 1995; Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (4), Bronze Star (2), Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, and Navy Commendation Medal.
Served two tours in Vietnam. First tour (1966-1967) assigned to Combat Engineer Group providing engineer support to 1st Air Cavalry Division and 4th Infantry Division. Second tour (1970-1971) I was Operations Officer for Construction Engineer Group building roads in II Corps area.

Commanded the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Transatlantic Division that entered Kuwait just after the Gulf War I to restore the infrastructure damaged by the Iraqis and the coalition forces. Previously commanded an Engineer District in 1984 that constructed King Khalid Military City near the Iraq/Kuwait border. It became a major supply base and jumping off point for the first Gulf War. This $8 billion project was one of many military facilities funded by the Saudi Ministry of Defence and Aviation and designed/constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Besides Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, other overseas assignments included Munich, Germany; Liverpool, Australia (near Sydney), and Fort Shafter, Hawaii; and in the continental US, atFort Belvoir, VA; West Point, NY; Fort Leavenworth, KS; Port Hueneme, CA; Vicksburg, MS; Newport, RI; New Orleans, LA; Fort Bragg, NC; Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Omaha, NE; Winchester, VA; and finally, Vicksburg again.
